Issigeac

The village of Issigeac was built in the middle-ages but its origins are a lot earlier with evidence of pre-historic life. Many of the houses are half-timbered houses and are all set out in a spiral design focusing on the gothic church of St Felicien and ‘Palais des Eveques de Sarlat’ (Bishop’s Palace). The houses are all different in design and you’ll find stone and wood carvings on some of the buildings.

See if you can find the 15th century ‘Maison des Têtes’ (House of Heads) where there is a collection of carved wooden heads and a stone carving on one corner which is known locally as ‘Monsieur d’Issigeac’.

You’ll also find ‘La Maison Champignon’ (The Mushroom House), the second floor overhang of which was designed so that it wouldn’t interfere with passing carts below. You will also need to take the ‘Tour de Ville’ (the road that runs around the village) to see some of the impressive 18th century architecture. Once you have finished exploring, take time to enjoy a meal or coffee in one of the many restaurants and cafes that are doted around the village.

Of course, if you happen to be there when one of the fantastic markets are on then you will have the chance to experience another side of Issigeac. Our advice is to enjoy, relax and let the village take you back through time!
