I suspect that, like us, the vast majority of clients looking to purchase a house in France, are doing so for the first time and are also looking to realise a long held ‘dream’. Inevitably therefore, the usual levels of stress and emotion involved in a house purchase may be heightened, particularly when the French language is thrown into the mix!

Thankfully, the role of the property agent in France is, from our experience, much more integral and involved in the purchase process than is the case in the UK property market - a huge benefit when trying to complete a purchase from another country !

We worked with Liesbeth over a number of years whilst we started to gauge what we wanted and were finally in a position to buy. Liesbeth was fantastic, very patient and understanding, knew what we wanted and supported us all the way through the process. We contacted Laporte property based upon a friend’s recommendation. We first spoke with Mélina who came to visit the house and wrote up the listing. This first encounter, just like later encounters with Melina, Simon and Liesbeth, was to the point and very positive. Unlike other agents with whom we had worked previously to sell our home years ago, we were struck by Laporte’s intent to understand the sellers and to understand the potential buyers, completing the bulk of the selection in the office. Each of the viewings was done for serious potential buyers who were already well acquainted with the area and our house in particular, and were very susceptible to buying the house. Having decided during lockdown to sell our house near Monpazier to move to a larger one in the area we had no hesitation in contacting La Porte having bought the house from them in the first place.

Through the restrictions of lockdown we were unable to visit France at all during either the sale or purchase. Living in Ireland and being in Level 5 lockdown for the past 12 months, one would think it impossible to purchase a property in France! Not the case with Tamzin and Mélina!

Having decided to move to France during the summer of 2020, we found that everyone at LaPorte was extremely helpful in guiding us through the list of properties which might match our criteria, in arranging viewings, and in helping with the entire process up until making an offer and the subsequent steps through to the final completion of the sale. Karen accompanied us on every step of the process, and was always available to help to sort out any last minute changes and glitches - even going as far as dog-sitting in the Notaire's waiting room whilst we completed the process (which was certainly beyond the call of duty).

Having read the previous clients' reviews I realised that I would have to revise my own review of our experience with Simon Renfrew and the team at La Porte.   All the the superlatives I had intended to use had already been used many times.    So what to say?   La Porte have been quite exceptional in the handling of the sale of our house and we realise that we were incredibly lucky to have chosen them rather other local agents.   We were hit by the corona virus situation a few months after putting our house on the market which meant that we were unable to visit France to during the selling process and had to rely completely on La Porte to handle our affairs.   When ever I had a problem and asked what I should do, the answer was always 'Don't worry we will do that.',  and this they did, time after time from handling everything with the Notaire, including  capital gains tax to be paid, to advising on the repatriation of our funds  to arranging people to help clear the house.   We did manage to get back to France for 10 frenetic days before completion and having no telephone or internet the continuing calm help and guidance of Melina enabled us to get the job done just in time!   

Calm guidance, and friendly efficient ***stance made working with La Porte a pleasure and we would recommend them 100%.

Seamless house buying experience with the help of La Porte. This summer, in the middle of lockdown, we got an idea of buying a holiday home in France. Having no clue about how the process works, where to begin (and with only basic French) we naturally assumed that we are in for many months of headaches. Luckily, we came across La Porte and Tamzin and Simon took over. We were very impressed by their professionalism and customer service ..the emails were answered 24/7, the calls returned in minutes and nothing was too much. We definitely did not expect to find this level of efficiency in France, in August, in the middle of a global pandemic! La Porte understood our requirements very well, only recommended properties and locations that really worked and did not waste any time. We took possession of our beautiful French property in January 2019, and could not be happier! Throughout the process of purchase, Liesbeth de Beer our first-rate negotiator helped and supported us unfailingly. The process differs from house purchase in the UK  and can be quite daunting. Not least, the whole business of currency exchange, at a time when Brexit was yielding dreadful rates against the pound, was depressing. Liesbeth was helpful throughout, putting us in touch with Smart Exchange, which we eventually used having researched other providers. Since our purchase, Liesbeth has maintained contact, helping us to find garden and pool maintenance and set up things like internet access in our new home. Her help in relation to our non-confirming fosse septique & sorting out the necessary changes were very welcome. We are fluent French speakers, (which does help) but knowing that we were able to draw on expertise and advice locally has been invaluable. We would wholeheartedly recommend La Porte and cannot thank them enough for the their helpfulness in our new venture.

Tamzin Renfrew always returned emails quickly and thoroughly answered every question we posed, large or small. (And we had many questions.)  She made the whole process of buying a house in France from the United States very comfortable and seamless. 

For Americans, finding and purchasing a home in France is not the easiest thing to do, especially if you don't have advanced French proficiency, a familiarity with the region's laws and customs, and/or relatives and friends nearby to help you scout. You have to be prepared to make make leaps in trust. Tamzin Renfrew was the answer -- she and Thomas Renfrew helped us make this enormous endeavor possible. They not only helped us vet the house to make sure it was all in working order (although know this: unforeseen things will always surface when you buy a two-hundred-year-old-house, and ours held a few surprises the first day) but they also directed us in the complicated process of obtaining a notaire, electricity, water, a housekeeper, and many other aspects of homeowning in France. In short, just about everything. Needless to say these processes are very different in America, so their help was absolutely indispensable to us. They were also very attentive from the very beginning to the very end. I highly recommend any prospective homeowner put their trust in her and her resources.
